The Palace

Picture
The Palace is my personal favorite climbing spot in Poudre. It has an endless amount of sport routes, and has a great view of the valley and river below after each climb. Bring extra shorts if you are going to The Palace because you need to cross the Poudre River to reach it. The river is approximately 20 yards across and may be brisk in the spring due to snow runoff. The river crossing just makes the time spent there more memorable and keeps the crowds down. The routes below are ranked by difficulty so the easiest are at the top of the page and harder ones at the bottom. Stay tuned for more route reviews as the climbing season progresses.

Routes to climb:
-Orange You Glad: (5.7)
-River Rats: (5.7)
-Turtle Head: (5.7)
-Cal Trop: (5.9-)
-Loyalist: (5.9)
-Cheerleaders Gone Hippie: (5.9+)
-Churchill Rejects: (5.9+)
-Cruiser (5.10-)
-The Scepter: (5.10a)

Crystal Wall

Picture
Crystal wall is located directly across the road from the palace. It is exposed to the sun all day, so climbing till 7 pm in the summer is possible. The wall is accessed from the south side of the highway up a steep incline just passed the tunnel on the left. Look for a long piece of purple tape running up the incline. This will be the easiest entrance to the approach. Be careful on the hike up because it is littered with loose rock. In the picture above you can see Crystal Wall and the tunnel.

Routes to climb:
-Gates of Crystal: (5.8)
-Lunch Bucket Crack: (5.8)
-Clean-Up on Aisle 9: (5.9)
-Tour de Poudre: (5.10b/c)

Directions: Crystal Wall and The Palace are located exactly 15 miles from Ted's Place. So set your odometer, head west, and keep an eye out for the tunnel because the pull off parking is a few hundred yards after it on the right.
