Down in the Canyon:
What to Expect:
-Castlewood Canyon is located on the plains just SE of Denver Colorado near the town of Franktown. The Cherry Creek River flows through the canyon cutting the conglomerate, shale and sandstone into rock faces that line all of it's walls. Vegetation surrounds the river and paths in the base of the canyon. This makes for a cooler walk in the summer. All the cliffs are accessible in some way from the top so they're perfect for setting up a top anchor if sport climbing bolts are not near. Be sure to have extra long slings or trad nuts to set up a top rope because although there may be trees near the river, they are sparse on the top of the ridge making small cracks and boulders your only reinforcement option. The canyon is dominated by trad routes but there are select areas where bolts can be found for spot climbing. Parking fee is $6 per day. |
