There and Back Again: Tumalo Falls Trail

My first trip to this area was after an April Lacrosse game in Sisters. I found the trail head by accident and just trying to get into National Forest. I pitched the tent and we set to making a massive fire and began to cook dinner which was an all encompassing dinner of hot dogs and mac and cheese. We then awoke and rebuilt the massive fire bigger than it was the night before. This was a massive mistake due to the people who traveled past the camp that day. Well we then began up the trail which had many interesting views of the Tumalo falls area. It totaled about 8 miles round trip to where we decided to turn around. Overall it was great short hike especially if you are close to Mount Bachelor. The fire was a mistake because the pit was so hot someone who went past called 911 and I received a warning from the Forest Service for it. 4/25-4/26/2013

Likability 6.5/10 It is a good day hike if your are in the Bend area, but not worth a drive from the Valley on its own.

The second go round was a 5 AM wake up call to make sure I got to Eastern Oregon with enough time to screw around in the Tumalo area. This was a fun trip as I ended up bush whacking up along the creek for about half a mile. I believe my favorite thing to do while in the outdoors is to bush whack with friends. Sometime July 2013.

Camping Elk Lake 2008

This was an interesting trip to say the least. It was after one of the heaviest snowfall total winters Oregon has ever seen. Our trip was in mid August and we were expecting many people to be at the lake as always. On our drive up we encountered more snow than expected and decided to stop and pull our canoe across the snow the last quarter mile to the campsite we hoped to use. We also help dig out a women and her kids after she had gotten their truck buried in the snow trying to get to the Lake. Once there we had a great time as there was only 2 or 3 other campsite being used out of the dozens around the lake. With our canoe we also enjoyed being the only ones on the water which was awesome. After our usual one night out in the woods it was time to leaving our snowed in campsite and head back to civilization. 9/15-9/16/2008

Likability 8/10 This would be higher if it was snowed in every year, but when no snow is present it is to crowded for my liking.

Backpacking Twin Lakes 2011

A trip that had taken about a year to put together almost fell apart last minute, but was saved by a friend's father volunteering to tag along as well made it work. This was a trip that I had done about 3 years earlier with my dad, brother, and friends. This time around it was Katie, Mariah, her father, and I delving into the Bull of the Creek Wilderness. The trail head is located on the north side of Elk Lake. It is 6.5 mile through greatly varied and beautiful terrain. The hike was great and once we had arrived everyone was going into the Second lake to cool off from the warm August weather we were experiencing per Oregon's usual weather. We then set to building a fire which we talked around it for quite a few hours. Then everyone was off to sleep. Then around 2 AM I awoke to yelling as Mariah has lost her way back to camp after going to the bathroom and was wondering on the other side of a hill away from camp. This was resolved by Katie and I turning on flashlight thus making it easier for her to find the campsite. Then the next morning we sadly had to begin our trek out of the Wilderness and back to Elk Lake where my dad and brother had camped and had done some kayaking. 9/**/-9/**/2011

Likability 9.5/10 Great place; and the length of the trail deters those who aren't there just to enjoy nature.

Backpacking South Sister 2013

3/30/2014

It was a bright and early morning on August 3rd. Wake up around 5:30 to load the truck and head off to pick up my hiking partner Katie. After the short ride to pick her up we were off to eastern Oregon to hike Oregon's 3rd highest peak South Sister. The hike began around 10, and boy was it a long hike. Starting in some beautiful forest that wound along Mountain river the trail was a magnificent hike. When we emerged from the forest we came upon Moraine Lake and if you look at the photos is an awesome place to camp. So to lighten our load for the Summit hike we claimed a spot overlooking the lake and pitched camp. After a short break we began on another leg of the journey. The first half was mostly flat and lightly forested. Then we began the real ascent that was moderate and somewhat rock to reach two separate false summits with the larger one opening up into a glacier lake around 8000 ft elevation. Leaving us the one of the most arduous miles I have ever hiked. This was made up of small lava rock so every two steps forwards were one step backwards. Tiring, but well worth the views from the top. Not to mention the top had a giant glacier that filled the caldera. After spending some time at the top we left the summit to complete our hike I believe ended up being around 13 miles that day total. Once back to camp it was time to eat, hydrate, and take in the view of the mountain we had vanquished. By then I was so exhausted it was a journey just to go the 200 yards to the lake to cool off. Now around 9 pm it was to bed I went. Almost as soon as I was starting to fall asleep some of the strongest winds I have ever tried to camp in blew off the mountain. This went on for easily the next 3 hours till around midnight. Once I woke up it was time to enjoy our great views and eat. Packing up camp next and making for my truck we left the beautiful country and headed for my truck and then back to civilization. 8/3-8/4/2013

Likability 10/10 One of the best day hikes you could do in Oregon, or you could enjoy it even more as I did by spending the night there.
