Switzerland Trail of America

7/28/2014

Vehicle: 1997 Toyota 4Runner
Location:  Nederland, CO to Gold Hill, CO

The trail follows an old railroad bed that was constructed in 1883 and demolished in 1919. Since trains can't handle a high grade slope most of the trail is fairly mellow. There are certainly plenty of rocky sections that require a high clearance vehicle but nothing too extreme. There isn't much remnants of a railroad anymore except for a large chimney at the Mount Alto picnic area where a train station used to stand. The entire route winds through beautiful forests with views of Longs Peak, the continental divide, as well as views of Boulder.
